Feeling the pressure to get your taxes done? The good news is you have three extra days to get your tax return filed this year. The due date for filing your 2016 taxes is Tuesday, April 18.
That’s because the traditional due date, April 15, falls on a Saturday this year. Typically, when the filing deadline falls on a Saturday, it is shifted to the following Monday. However, this year, Monday, April 17, is Emancipation Day, a holiday in D.C. For the purposes of tax filing deadlines, legal holidays in the District of Columbia affect the due date nationwide.
You’ve still got several days before your tax return is due, but make sure you file by April 18. If you are not able to file by the deadline, you’ll want to apply for an extension before the due date passes. And keep in mind, filing for an extension gives you more time to submit your tax return; it does not give you additional time to pay the tax you owe. If you owe tax, you’ll want to submit that by the April 18 deadline.
